Though Intimidating, Ice Climbing a Safe, Fun Winter Activity

Midwest Mountain Guides teaching beginner courses

DULUTH, Minn.- Outdoor enthusiasts, adventurers at heart, and people just looking for something to do on a Saturday strapped in for a day of ice and mixed climbing at Quarry Park.

It was all part of the Duluth Ice & Mixed Fest, hosted by the Duluth Climbers Coalition. “A lot of folks here in the beginner class have never even rock climbed before,” says Al Wiberg of Midwest Mountain Guides. “The idea behind this is to give people that exposure. It’s for all ages and all ability levels.”

Parts of the quarry’s ice was farmed by the DCC during the Northland’s two-week cold snap. It’s allowed climbing fanatics to get their annual adrenaline fix, but others might find these giant ice walls a bit intimidating. “There’s that perceived risk like it’s really dangerous…and then there’s also that perceived risk of, ‘Wow, I need to be really strong to do this.’ (But) that’s far, far from the truth.” Wiberg assured.

Midwest Mountain Guides has safety measures for climbers to ensure a worry-free experience. “We have all professional guides who are trained to help teach people these skills.” says Wiberg. “They’re going to have their boots and crampons and what we call ice axes. Then probably most importantly, is our harness and helmet. Because there’s a lot of fallen ice that comes down throughout the climb.”

While the ice climbing season is short here in the Northland, there are year-round opportunities to try rock climbing. Even if you find yourself a little cagey with heights, there will surely be a group of climbers ready to support and cheer you on.

“I love the community,” smiled Wiberg. “Come out. Be hardy. Don’t be afraid, and just have fun. That’s really what it’s about just having a really good time.”
