Duluth Polar Plunge to Make a Splash For the 22nd Year
DULUTH, Minn. — It’s that time of the year, the Polar Plunge is back in Duluth for its 22nd year.
The Duluth Police Department partners with Special Olympics Minnesota to host the biggest fundraiser for Special Olympic athletes.
Over 650 people are signed up to take a chilly dip into the Superior Bay on Saturday.
Each plunger raises a minimum of 75 dollars to participate. Over the years the Duluth Plunge has raised nearly $3 million.
“Being involved in raising money for the Special Olympics, we get a lot of the athletes from Special Olympics that come down here, they jump in with us, they celebrate with us,” said Jeremy O’Connor, Duluth Polar Plunge Committee Member. “So it’s great to see smiles on their faces, that’s what it’s all about.”
While the water might be cold, plungers celebrate to the fullest by dressing up in all kinds of costumes. Festivities kick off at the Garden Saturday with a costume contest and the plunge starts at 2 p.m.
