Lake Superior College Named Designated Center of Excellence for Maritime Training and Education
DULUTH, Minn. — The Maritime Administration gave three colleges in Minnesota the designation of a Center of Excellence and Lake Superior College is one of them.
The designation is bestowed upon institutions of higher ed who provide education and training for the maritime industry. LSC currently offers many programs in the field such as welding, machining, firefighting and engine repair and maintenance.
The designation will allow the college to take a closer look and see if they can expand and add more programs. It also will give them an opportunity to work with individuals already working in the maritime market.
“A lot of the students that come here don’t know about the opportunities that exist in the maritime industry. So, being able to work with our port partners even closer will help showcase some of the opportunities that are available within the industry for their jobs,” said Linda Kingston, Vice President for Academic and Student Affairs at LSC.
All three institutions cover all of the major shipping industries within the state of Minnesota, along the Mississippi River and here on Lake Superior. LSC says they can all help each other with workforce needs.
