SUPERIOR, Wis. — Twin Ports community members are learning all about the St. Louis River and its importance to our area.

The Lake Superior National Estuarine Research Reserve or Lake Superior Reserve is hosting the 14th Annual St. Louis River Summit this week. The 3-day event is taking place at UWS and is the biggest year yet bringing people together and encouraging coordination of projects, programs, and activities.

A wide variety of people take part from researchers, state agencies, students, and community members. All to share their work and celebrate the water. Organizers say it is a critical time for people to understand more about the river.

“Right here in Duluth-Superior we’re like the headwaters to the Great Lakes system. Like the largest freshwater lake system in the world and that just gives me goosebumps when I say it and think about it. And we’re right here and there’s a lot of different ways people engage with, and take care of, and learn from the water and the plants and the animals around here,” said Luciana Ranelli, Education Coordinator at the Lake Superior Reserve.

The overall goal of the summit is to better the condition of the St. Louis River and make new connections of those surrounding it.
