MPCA Investigating 1,400-Gallon Gasoline Leak At Duluth Short Stop
DULUTH, Minn. — FOX 21 learned Thursday evening that the Minnesota Pollution Control Agency is investigating a significant gasoline leak at a Duluth gas station.
The spill occurred Wednesday at the Short Stop at 5402 E. Superior Street in Duluth.
“There was a 1,400 gallon release reported by C & B Distributing from one of their fuel pumps to soil,” the MPCA told FOX 21 Friday.
Fencing could be seen surrounding a hole at the gas station Friday.
The MPCA says it is looking into the cause of the spill and overseeing the cleanup. The air is also being monitored, but the MPCA said there is no risk to the public.
“There is no impact to surface water or storm sewers. There was a small quantity of gasoline found in a nearby sanitary sewer which is also being monitored. As part of the cleanup, there is soil being excavated and stored. It will need to be sampled before it can be transported for proper disposal,” according to the MPCA.
When FOX 21 requested information about the spill late Thursday, the city of Duluth released the following statement:
“DFD was called out to the scene and initially sent 4 Quint and 11 Engine. DFD later sent 6 Engine and a Haz Mat team out to follow up. Additionally, the city had 5 total Public Works and Utilities staff responding to check on our sanitary and stormwater sewers.”
