Spring Feast Educates Duluth Community on Indigenous Culture

DULUTH, Minn. — The American Indian Learning Resource Center at UMD is welcoming the new season in with a feast.

The center hosts 2 annual feasts a year and speakers come from all over to share their knowledge and wisdom. Tuesday’s speaker was author Sandy White Hawk. She spoke about her book and the Supreme Court’s decision not to overturn the Indian Child Welfare Act, as well her life as a Native American woman.

Anyone could go to the event to learn something new. An organizer says as a Native person, gathering is one of the best things to do as a community.

“To host something where everyone can gather together. To talk, to share, to learn, to grow and to eat together. I mean there’s something special about that,” said Brooke Lunski, Student Support Specialist at the American Indian Learning Resource Center.

Coming up on Saturday, the Indigenous Student Organization is hosting their second annual Powwow. It is a free event with vendors, a food truck, special music and dancing. That will be at the Ward Wells Field House at UMD. Doors open at 11 a.m.
