Intercollegiant Esports Coming to UW-Superior

SUPERIOR, Wis –Come this fall, there will be a new intercollegiate sport at UW-Superior; and it will surprise some of you.

It’s esports. University students playing video games! The school has created an eSports gaming room for the players to use in competition.

This past January, esports at UWS came to life with a club team. Since then the UWS team has been competing with other schools in Wisconsin.

So far, the team is leading its division in the Wisconsin Rocket League. The team has compiled a six-and-one record.

Just like any other team the UWS Esports has two coaches to help the players

“It’s like a normal sports team,” said Brady Stocker the Co-Coach of the UWS Esports. “You’re looking at other teams, going through film for a little bit. Mostly though, just being a resource for our students. So if they need help in the classroom we can connect them with those things they may not know about.”

While the gaming room has high-end electronics that are designed specifically for gaming, it is available to other students during designated recreation times.

The school says this is the first formal extracurricular eSports program in the region.

In September, UWS Esports will become an official varsity sport at UWS. The team will be competing in and be a member of, the National Esports Collegiate Conference.
