Pelicans Make Pit Stop In Duluth Before Flying To Canada
DULUTH, Minn. – A pelican invasion has happened on the St. Louis River in Duluth, but it’s only temporary.
The great white pelicans have made a pit stop by the Chambers Grove Park in the Fond du Lac neighborhood.
The birds are fueling up to complete their migration journey to Canada, according the Duluth Parks and Recreation department.
Pelicans are some of Minnesotas’s largest birds with a wingspan of up to nearly 6 feet
Pelicans were nearly wiped out of Minnesota as it was falsely believed they would eat game fish.
Populations have since bounced back.
Minnesota now has the largest population of nesting pairs in the world.
You might notice bumps on the bills of the pelicans. Experts say these horns appear in the spring on both males and females and are shed after eggs are laid.
