Northland College Receives Last-Minute ‘Transformative Donor Gifts’

Northland College Sign

ASHLAND, Wis. — Another sign of hope was reported Tuesday evening involving the future of Northland College.

College officials they received “several transformative donor gifts” within the last 24 hours that has “considerably” impacted what is possible for the future of Northland College.

Three weeks ago the Board issued a statement of financial crisis.

Northland had a goal of raising $12 million through fundraising and other donations.  They only raised about $1.2 million at the time, which was significantly short of the urgent goal to keep the doors of the college open.

For the last several days, the Board of Trustees has been meeting with faculty to determine options that might allow the school to stay open in a new way.

The Board is now planning to provide its final decision by the end next week.

Below is the full statement from the Boat of Trustees:

Statement from the Northland College Board of Trustees

The Northland College Board of Trustees intended to provide a definitive update on the College’s future today, April 23; however, there has been a positive development that changes the scope of the situation.

In the last twenty-four hours, Northland College has received several transformative donor gifts. While Northland is still short of its total funding needs, these gifts considerably impact what is possible. In light of this, the Board of Trustees believes the right thing to do is to reconvene with the Faculty Ad Hoc Exigency and Operations and Budget Committees to continue the work of bringing together proposed adjustments and the new budget realities. This will continue to require a strategic academic re-prioritization and the need for serious decisions, but we are hopeful about the future.

The Board recognizes that this creates continued uncertainty for our students, faculty, staff, alumni, friends, and neighbors, and it is committed to advancing this work as quickly as possible with a decision shared by the end of next week. We thank the Northland community for their continued support and appreciate the positive work of our faculty and staff.
