The driver who slammed into the back end of a St. Louis County deputy’s vehicle was under the influence, according to the criminal complaint.

Court documents say 25-year-old Logan Niemi of Kinney, Minnesota crashed into the deputy’s SUV around 9 a.m. Monday morning. This happened on Highway 169 in Mountain Iron.

The squad was parked in a land of traffic while the deputy assisted traffic control for a different crash. The deputy and Niemi were not injured.

The charges say Niemi was under the influence of a combination of cannabis, controlled substances, or hazardous substances. Investigators say they also found meth, packaging and metal knuckles in the suspect’s vehicle. He has two prior impaired driving convictions.

Meanwhile the Duluth News Tribune is reporting the crash that the Deputy was attending to in Mountain Iron was also drug related. Court documents say 40-year-old Benjamin Angove of Chisholm failed to yield at an intersection, colliding with a pickup truck carrying four teens. The documents say Angove admitted to using cannabis the day before and said he relapsed on meth a week earlier. Troopers said he also showed signs of impairment, according to the DNT’s report.

The truck’s 18-year-old driver was being evaluated for a possible concussion and all four teens reported non-life-threatening injuries, according to the complaint.
