SUPERIOR, Wis. — A former Sergeant with the Superior Police Department is taking a plea deal in a 2022 fatal hit and run crash that involved alcohol.

With a guilty plea of two counts of Vehicular Homicide involving alcohol, 44-year-old Gregory Swanson is facing the possibility of 9 years in prison for each count.

Court documents say Swanson’s blood-alcohol level was two times over the legal limit. He rear-ended a disabled vehicle on the 5200 block of East 2nd Street in Superior. The incident happened around 1:20 a.m. July 15, 2022. A 23-year-old man who was pushing the vehicle from the front was killed. A 2-month-old in the vehicle died four days later and the child’s mother and her 2-year-old were injured.

According to the criminal complaint witnesses told investigators that Swanson drove away from the scene and threw away alcohol containers at a nearby gas station.

The plea deal means 10 other charges against Swanson will be dropped. Douglas County Judge George Glonik is overseeing the case. He will decide the ultimate sentence and whether to have the two sentences run consecutively or concurrently.

Sentencing is set for this July 17. State prosecutors are suggesting 5 years in prison, 4 years of probation for each charge.
