Northern Star: Isaac Fugere

First-Team All-UMAC selection in 2023

SUPERIOR, Wis.- From the perspective of Isaac Fugere, time has flown by in the last four years playing baseball at UW-Superior.

“It’s definitely different being an older guy that people kind of look at as just the older guy that has been there.” However, the First-Team All-UMAC selection is taking things in stride as a senior leader for the Yellowjackets.

“I feel like I can really help the younger guys on the team and be able to give some leadership in that aspect.” After all, it hasn’t been long since he enrolled at UWS after graduating from Duluth East.

“You know, I really never knew where I was going to go (for college),” Fugere laughed. “I never had really thought about it. I decided to come (to UWS) because it’s kind of close to home; and I have horses, so I can be around them.”

Fugere’s reliable play at the catcher position has been a big reason why UWS has clinched two consecutive winning seasons.

“Ike’s been around for a while, so he knows the game,” mused pitcher Ben Welle. “He’s a really good game caller. If I pull it in the dirt, I know he’s going to block it. He’s going to make it throw down to second, and he’s going to shoot somebody out. So, we’re fortunate to have him back there.”

After this season, Fugere will have one more year of eligibility, and he’ll take some to time to figure out what his plans are for 2025. No matter what he decides, he’s proud to call himself a Yellowjacket. “It’s been a good group to come together and create a good culture.”

UWS will play Northwestern in the first round of the UMAC Tournament on Thursday.
