Lowell And Marshall Elementary Students Plant Over A Thousand Trees
DULUTH, Minn. — Some elementary students in Duluth made quite the impact on Friday.
Kids were able to show off their green thumbs when they took on quite the project. Thanks to the efforts from both Lowell and Marshall schools, third through fifth graders planted over one thousand trees. This was led by UMD graduate Gavin Buersken. The end goal was to increase plant diversity, and to help forest restoration. Another important lesson was in mind for this event. There is hope to encourage these students to continue spending time outdoors. And to keep planting trees.
“That’s the goal. Ten, twenty years later, students can come back and be like ‘Wow, I planted that tree when I was in third grade, and now look how big it is!’ That’s what I really hope comes from this,” said Buersken, outdoor educator.
The students had the opportunity to plant seven different species of trees.
