MN DNR Recommends Safety Equipment When Fishing

Fishing Outlook

MINNESOTA — As fishermen and women head out on the water this weekend, the Minnesota DNR is making sure people stay safe.

The DNR suggests having the right safety equipment including an engine cut off switch and life jackets for each person. The engine cut off switch is recommended to be attached in case of an unexpected fall overboard. Life jackets are required by law to be worn by children under the age of 10. The DNR recommends that adult’s model good behavior and wear them on the boat.

Another thing to keep in mind is the temperature of the water.

“So, water temperatures are still dangerously cold and an unexpected fall into cold water this time of year can cause cold shock response. So, what that means is if you fall into the water unexpectedly your body automatically gasps. So, by wearing a life jacket you’re ensuring that your head stays above water and it’s the one piece of safety equipment that can save your life,” said Lisa Dugan, Boat & Water Safety Outreach Coordinator.

The number one tip is owning and wearing a life jacket that you are comfortable in and that fits you well.
