CANOSIA TOWNSHIP, Minn. — A Duluth girl has died after a UTV side-by-side she was riding in rolled into some trees earlier this month in Canosia Township, according to Sgt. Eric Sathers.

Meanwhile, the St. Louis County Sheriff’s Office says criminal charges could soon be filed against the driver.

The crash happened around 10:15 p.m. May 6 near the intersection of Pike Lake Road and Helm Road.

On Wednesday, the girl who died was identified as Emma Malmquist, 17, of Duluth.

Three other people were on the two-seater machine: an 18-year-old female from Duluth, a 26-year-old female from Duluth, and a 27-year-old male from Superior, according to Sgt. Sather. Their injuries were not life-threatening.

The 18-year-old was driving the vehicle and alcohol is believed to be a factor, according to Commander Wade Rasch.

Authorities said a referral to the County Attorney’s Office is expected in the coming weeks.
