Proctor Hosts 102nd Annual Memorial Day Observance

PROCTOR, Minn. — For over 100 years the Proctor community has hosted a Memorial Day observance and program.

On Monday the ceremony included 60 military members that were honored for their service. There were also many speakers and live music. A local Proctor resident brings his family to this event every year. He says it is important for everyone to learn the meaning behind Memorial Day.

“I think it’s really nice for the old people to see the younger ones come and realize that they’re being taught how important this is and how important living in this country and the freedoms we have, the blessings God’s given each of us. It’s important for the little kids to see that and appreciate that the old folks like me or older than me that are here paying honor to our veterans,” said Jeff Gookins.

The observance is sponsored by the Proctor American Legion Post 106. It takes place outside of the Proctor Community Center.

Following the Proctor Memorial Day Observance the American Legion Honor Guard visited cemeteries to salute the departed. There were 6 total cemeteries visited including Pine Hill Cemetery. A coordinator for the event says it is important to remember those who never returned home and to make sure those who have passed are not forgotten.

“You know it’s a community event. That they’re there to remember and to support and not forget the loved ones. Our fathers, and sons, mothers and daughters. Those who have served in uniform, they’ll be remembered,” said Jake Benson, coordinator for the Proctor Memorial Day observance.

Other cemeteries visited were not just in Proctor. They went to Hermantown, Twig and Pike Lake as well.
