WLSSD Kick Starts First Community Clean-Out Day

DULUTH, Minn. — Confused on where to throw what appliance where or do you house hazardous materials like unused cleaning products, paint, or alkaline batteries? Saturday, Western Lake Superior Sanitary District held a free community clean-out day in Lincoln Park to help people get rid of their old junk.

This is the first event of its kind and had a busy line extending down W 1st St. People brought old tvs, beds and mattresses, scrap metal, chemicals, and other hard to get rid of waste. Organizers say that people don’t know how to recycle some objects, don’t have the transportation, or the time to make it to their facilities. They hope that these community clean-out days can take both mental and physical weight off of their backs and be properly recycled.

“Today we’ve seen folks on motorcycles, we had several folks walk down with their materials, and we’re also offering options if you need assistance,” said AJ Axtell, WLSSD director of community relations. “If you just can’t get your stuff here today, we’re here to talk to you about it and help bridge that gap.”

If you missed out on this weekend’s community clean-out, WLSSD said that they plan on doing this event again in different neighborhoods. The next community clean-out day is planned for this fall in the central hillside neighborhood. WLSSD has have guides on how to safely discard hazardous chemicals or large waste, you can check out their full guides here.
