Wisconsin National Guard Helping At Across The Pond Veterans Park
IRON RIVER, Wis. — Members of the Wisconsin National Guard are helping to make way for new RV and camping site at a Veterans Park in Iron River.
The project has been in the works since 2017 at Across the Pond Veterans Park. $300,000 has been raised so far to make it happen. 31 military personnel are approved to dig a drainage pond and stake out the campsites.
“A part of the campground construction is the DNR had required them to do a retention pond as part of the campground permitting process. So here today, we are constructing the retention pond, which is approximately 5,000 cubic yards that need to be hauled off site,” said 1st Lieutenant Erica Meulemans, officer in charge.
The improvements will help create an ADA compliant park for veterans of all abilities so they can enjoy the beauty of the outdoors. In the meantime, parts of the park are already proving the mission of the property to honor all members of the military, past and present.
“It’s amazing when you go look at those tiles how many people in the area have served and they really don’t voice it. You don’t hear it out or anything like that. But we’ve been honored that they put it up there and you can come here and just see people’s names and areas they’ve been,” said Roger Johnson, Construction Manager of the park.
Across the Pond Veterans Park sits on 23 acres of land.
