Update: Missing Kayaker In Washburn County Found Alive

Update (6/18/24):  The 19-year-old kayaker who went missing on the Namekagon River Friday was found safe Tuesday afternoon by the Wisconsin DNR.

Sheriff Dennis Stuart told FOX 21 Gunnur Hess, of Sarona, was located in St. Croix Falls, about 50 miles away from his starting point at the County K access point of the river.

Stuart said Hess did not have a cell phone on him during his trip to be able to call for help.

“Thank to everyone that assisted and the tips that came in that were helpful,” Stuart said.


Original post:  A 19-year-old kayaker is missing after leaving for a solo trip down the Namekagon River on Friday.

According the the Washburn County Sheriff’s Office, Gunnur Hess was supposed to embark on his trip Friday in his gray Pelican kayak. His family was supposed to pick him up afterwards, but they have not heard from Hess since he left.

The Sheriff’s Office and National Park Service are currently searching the river, but have found no signs of Hess. They are asking the public to stay away from the search and call if they have any information.
