One in Custody After High Speed Chase Through Iron Range

Hibbing Trafic Pursuit

HIBBING, Minn. — A 23-year-old man is in custody after leading St. Louis County Sheriff’s Deputies and other law enforcement agencies on a high-speed chase Thursday afternoon.

The chase began when a St. Louis County investigator was nearly struck head on by a pickup truck that was driving wildly on Hwy 37.

The driver was initially stopped by St. Louis County investigators. It was determined that he had outstanding warrants. When the driver was told he was under arrest, he refused to exit the truck and quickly sped off.

Law officials from surrounding cities pursued the vehicle but called off the chase for safety reasons. Due largely to dangerously high speeds through Hibbing.

But the chase eventually began again, when the truck sped through a work zone, forcing vehicles off the road, damaging other vehicles, and hitting construction barrels.

A section of one of the barrels flew into the windshield of a sheriff’s squad car slightly injuring the deputy.

Near Mountain Iron, the chase ended, resulting in the 23-year-old driver’s pending charges of fleeing in a motor vehicle, 2nd-degree assault, reckless driving, damage to property, and DWI.
