Hibbing Police Make Big Break In 2017 Unsolved Murder Of Businessman

HIBBING, Minn. — The 2017 murder of Hibbing business owner Brian Nelson remains unsolved, as the 7th anniversary of his death approaches next week. But Monday night, FOX 21 confirmed Hibbing police investigators are closing in on the case.

After seven years of investigating every lead possible, new forensic technology has created the most credible lead yet into finding out who killed Nelson.

The 60-year-old was found stabbed to death in his locked and secured Hibbing home on Monday July 10, 2017.

His home was located behind The Bottle shop liquor store that Nelson owned and operated.

Nelson was last seen Saturday, July 8, 2017 while closing his store and then taking the day’s cash sales home with him to do his routine deposit on Monday, July 10.

The cash was never found, other than his body.

On the one-year anniversary of Nelson’s death, his mother spoke out during a news conference with authorities.

“Whoever is guilty, whoever has done this, I hope they feel so guilty they can’t live with themselves and have to come forward and say something,” said Helga Nelson, the victim’s mother, in 2018.

Hibbing Deputy Police Chief Tyler Schwerzler told FOX 21’s Dan Hanger on Monday that he could not get into specifics at this time about what new evidence had uncovered.

But he said the evidence is significant enough for his department to be close to sending investigative reports to the County Attorney’s Office for possible charges as early as the end of July.

Schwerzler stressed there is no danger to the public.
