Doctor Weighs In As Summer’s Heat Moves In
DULUTH, Minn. — The rising temps come with the risk of heat exhaustion. One Aspirus St. Luke’s Doctor shares tips on how to prevent overheating in the summer.
Dr. Chris Delp, an Emergency Medicine Physician says intense sun exposure can lead to heat exhaustion and even heat stroke, which could be fatal. But there are ways to protect yourself, such as avoiding intense exercise in high temps, hydrating and taking action if you become nauseous.
“You have to hydrate,” said Dr. Chris Delp, Aspirus St. Luke’s Attending Emergency Physician. “Now, there are some beverages that you should avoid during the heat and that’s alcohol and the high sugar containing beverages is another one. Just stick with water or the electrolyte beverages to maintain your hydration during this time.”
Dr. Delp says severe sunburn is also a large problem during the summer months, and its important to properly protect yourself with sunscreen and SPF clothing.
