Caravan for Disability Freedom and Justice Stops in Twin Ports

SUPERIOR, Wisc. — The Caravan for Disability Freedom and Justice made a stop in Superior on Monday.

The caravan is traveling around the country, starting in San Diego at the beginning of April. Members of the caravan want to celebrate local disability rights movements, educate communities of disability history, and — most of all — encourage people to vote.

“A lot of people say ‘well why should I go and vote? My vote doesn’t matter, one single vote doesn’t matter,'” said advocate Marilee Adamski-Smith. “But it really does. We really want the disability community to come out and cast their vote.”

“We don’t say who to go vote for, but we want people to go vote this year because it’s an election year. The things that we want changed and the services that we need won’t get changed if we don’t vote.”

The Superior stop had voting resources and a registration table. It featured remarks from both Twin Ports mayors and Tom Olin’s photography collection documenting the disability rights movement. The caravan has several more stops planned in Wisconsin and is headed to Menomonie on Tuesday.
