A Behind the Scenes Look At Train Track Inspections

DULUTH, Minn.– Being out on the railroad, there is so much to take in.

Unexpected landscapes, and behind the scenes projects. The Lake Superior & Mississippi Railroad gives people the opportunity to experience the outdoors from a new perspective. All thanks to the help of volunteers. Before all of this happens, there are countless safety measures put in place.

“The breaks have to be tested in three or four different ways.” said Lake Superior & Mississippi Fireman Dave Bolgrien. “We have a check list, like pilots would when they’re doing their pre-flight checks. And everyone has a check list in their hand. and we know what we’re looking for. It’s a team effort.”

After everything is finalized, folks get to experience a unique ride full of places you wouldn’t be able to access on public grounds.

They cross through wetlands, rivers, and nearby trails. However, the safety inspections don’t stop there.”You would never dream of a train going on the ground. You know, that’s where they don’t want to be. We make sure that doesn’t happen by having a regular maintenance program. To replace ties, to check the gauge between the rails, how far apart they are.” said Bolgrien

All of this happens to ensure a safe, comfortable ride for guests.
