One Dead, One Injured After ATV Rollover in Balkan Township

BALKAN TOWNSHIP, Minn. – An ATV accident killed one and injured another on a trail in Balkan Township in St. Louis County Saturday afternoon.

The St. Louis County Sheriff’s Office says they responded to the scene between Chisholm and Buhl around 3:40 p.m.  When they arrived the side-by-side ATV was upright, but appeared to have rolled over based on the damage to its roof.

Two people were inside the ATV when the accident occurred.  It was determined they were both thrown from the vehicle, and neither was wearing a helmet or seatbelts.

The passenger, 31-year-old Kevin Joseph Jamnick of Hibbing, died at the scene.  The driver, 29-year-old Casey Jerald Daniels of Chisholm, was taken to University Medical Center Mesabi – Fairview in Hibbing for treatment of injuries and released.

A cause remains under investigation by the St. Louis County Sheriff’s Office, with assistance from the Midwest Medical Examiner’s Office.  Speed, alcohol, and not using appropriate safety restraints are considered as contributing factors.

The sheriff’s office was assisted by the Chisholm Police Department, Chisholm Ambulance, Chisholm Fire Department, St. Louis County Sheriff’s Office Rescue Squad, and Lifelink Air Ambulance.
