Operation K-9 Returns Thursday at New Location with More Dogs

SUPERIOR, Wis. — This Thursday Operation K-9 returns bigger and better for its 10th year.

Due to construction at Ole Haugsud Field, the event has moved to the grassy track field near UW-Superior’s Wessman Arena.

Three new law enforcement agencies are taking part in the fun this year including 19 K-9 teams.

You can expect canines and handlers showcasing routine training like search and seizure protocols and drug busts.

The public will be able to see it all while connecting with local law enforcement agencies and their K-9’s up close.

“Should expect to see some really well-trained k-9’s. “It’s a good family experience,” said K-9 Handler Charlie Mahlen. “We like to get people out in the community to see what we do, day in and day out as well as a little bit of show and fun.”

“So, this is a good way to get the community involved,” said K-9 Handler Justin Mcintosh. “They get to interact with officers on a personal level. Dogs are a common-ground for people, or I guess common interest is a better way to put it. Everybody likes dogs so it’s an easy way for people to come and approach officers.”

The fun starts this Thursday at 5 p.m. Other family-friendly activities and tours of law enforcement vehicles and equipment will be available.

Operation K-9 is free to attend, and any donations will go towards the K-9 Foundation.
