Duluth Fire, Police Duke It Out For Northern Lights Foundation
DULUTH, Minn. – Duluth Fire and Police Departments went head-to-head on the diamond Thursday night, all for a good cause.
For the last 15 years, the two agencies have played a charity ball game at Wade Stadium to raise money for local families who have children with life-threatening illnesses through the Northern Lights Foundation.
The Northern Lights Foundation provides families, who live as far as 100 miles away from Duluth, with up to $2,500 in unrestricted grants that can help alleviate financial stress that hardships can cause.
“When you’re going through a traumatic event like that, you can hardly think. You don’t know. Sometimes you can’t even think about what your next step is,” said Christy Strohm, of the Northern Lights Foundation. “And people are so worried about like, how am I going to pay my mortgage or how am I going to pay my rent? It’s provides a little light in their life and it just eases the burden on these families so they don’t have to stress about the financial aspect.”
As of this year, the Northern Lights Foundation has granted 250 families with grants totaling $500,000.
Duluth Police Department beat the Duluth Fire Department 15-1.
