Northland K-9s Show Off At 10th Annual Operation K-9
SUPERIOR, Wis.–K-9 units from five law enforcement agencies were on full display in Superior Thursday for the 10th annual Operation K-9.
Officers and their partners in crime demonstrated tasks for a big audience on the field next to Wessman Arena.
Dozens of families, first responders, and supporters of the police packed the stands for a free series of demonstrations.
Fox 21’s Emily Halling spoke with Douglas County Deputy Justin Mcintosh live during the 5:30 p.m. newscast. He said the bond with his German Shepherd, K-9 Kip, is stronger than his own fellow deputies.
“My dog rides with me 12 hours a day. So, he’s with me, he goes home with me. We start our shift together; we end our shift together. And all day long he’s with me. It’s like having your best friend with you.” explained Deputy Mcintosh of Douglas County Sheriff’s Office.
The K-9 units are involved in all kinds of duties, ranging from detecting narcotics, tracking, and evidence recovery.
“There’s so many different types of dogs that have so many different roles. So, it could be from the way they get rewarded to how they look, what their job is.” said Officer Brittany Dillinger, of Hibbing Police Department. Dillinger is also another K-9 handler.
Operation K-9 is a way to raise money for the Northland K-9 Foundation, which helps purchase K-9s, as well as their protective gear for law enforcement agencies throughout the Northland. Thursday’s event included a silent auction and merch for sale and simple donations.
