A Sensory-Inclusive Day Out With Thomas the Tank Engine

TWO HARBORS, Minn. — Thomas had something special in his tank engine on Monday.

The big blue locomotive was back in Two Harbors for a day out. But ditched his bells and whistles for a quieter, more laid-back atmosphere for children with sensory sensitivities.

“With Thomas, when you’re here for a normal day, there’s a lot of bells and whistles, a lot of noise comes out, a lot of excitement, things that doesn’t always match for a sensory-friendly day. So, to be able to have the quietness of the day just fits in so much better for the individuals that come,” said Mayor Lew Conner, Two Harbors.

This experience not only provided an inclusive atmosphere for attendees but was also offered at a value price. Admittance was fully free for one person with autism accompanied by an adult thanks to donors and supporters.

“Through Mattel, which is the brand manager for Thomas, who waives all fees, the foundation through the Lake Superior Community Foundation, and the Depot Foundation, contribute so that a member of the family that has autism and an adult to get in for free and that allows people on all means level to enjoy this guy back here,” said Ken Buehler, Executive Director of the Lake Superior Railroad Museum.

Thomas will be back in two harbors again soon. To find out when you can visit the website here.
