Barbie: A Cultural Icon Exhibition at the DECC

DULUTH, Minn. — A one-of-a-kind interactive exhibit has opened at the DECC featuring Mattel’s most iconic female figure.

You guessed it. We’re talking about the famous Barbie. The iconic toy has taken over Paulucci Hall displaying 65 years of history and cultural impact of Barbie. You can check out vintage dolls, life-sized fashion designs, barbie boxes, and you can even check out Barbie’s convertible.

“To watch my childhood in my daughter’s eyes, because I used to play with barbie. And so, to see her play with barbie, get all like interested and invested in this just melted my heart really,” said Michelle Webb, attending with her daughter.

Even if you haven’t played in decades, you may just find the barbies you used to play with. Organizers say a lot of work went into the care, transport, and display of each vintage piece.

“And the Mattel folks came. And painstakingly worked with every doll cleaning her face, adjusting her outfit, and actually curling her hair and putting it into place. So, these dolls are pristine,” said Lucie Amundsen, DECC Communications Director. “We have the original Barbie from 1959. When she came, she came in a case and was put in with gloves and given all the relevance and reverence that she deserves.”

The Exhibit is open daily from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., until September 2nd. Then 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Friday to Sunday until September 22nd. Tickets range from $17 to $62, kids 5 and under can attend for free.
