Gary New Duluth Celebrates National Night Out
DULUTH, Minn. — Tuesday night, dozens of communities and their police departments came out for National Night Out.
For the first time in years, the Gary New Duluth neighborhood held its own National Night Out, thanks to KornerStore and other local businesses.
Duluth police officers and neighbors there enjoyed burgers and hot dogs from the B and B Wagon. There was also live music to add to the fun.
“Gary has not had a national night out in about seven years. So, I think it’s phenomenal that we’re here, getting gathered on 100 first, all neighbors together, having some good food,” said Derek Medved, owner of KornerStore.
“What was your favorite part about the cake? That it was from Super One, and Super One makes good cakes,” said community member Landon Buller.
For one Duluth police officer, National Night Out is a positive way to build relationships people of all ages, making it a great change of pace for patroling the streets.
“Usually, we’re responding to calls when people are going through their worst days. It might be the first time they’ve had contact with us. So, it’s nice to just get out, and mingle with the community, when we’re all kind of laid back. Just enjoying the beautiful night,” said Officer Morgan Cekalla, Duluth Police.
National Night Out has been going on now for 41 years strong. Millions of neighbors take part across thousands of communities every year, from all 50 states.
