Largest Emergency Shelter North of Twin Cities Now Open

HIBBING, Minn. — The largest 30-day emergency shelter north of the Twin Cities is now open in Hibbing.

The Arrowhead Economic Opportunity Agency making the announcement Thursday. The shelter named; Home on the Range provides a safe place for those without homes.

It is the only domestic violence shelter located on the Iron Range. The new space includes 28 rooms and is staffed 24/7. The shelter helps those in need in all avenues.

“So, you know it could be helping them find help with mental health, it could be helping them get assistance with food assistance. It could be health insurance you know it’s a lot of different aspects that goes into making someone successful in their housing,” said Angela Neal, Housing Resource Director, AEOA.

Prior to the opening there was only one small emergency shelter in Virginia.

“We’re receiving numerous phone calls a day, people knocking on the doors. So, the need is definitely there. My hope is maybe someday we won’t be full so that means that we’re helping all of the folks up here but ultimately, we’ll be here as long as they need us,” said Becky Scorich, Housing Supervisor, AEOA.

Home on the Range is located at 2313 East 3rd Avenue in Hibbing. This is the second of two buildings renovated over the last year.
