Prep Football: Greyhounds Shock Esko, Giants Stomp South Ridge

Esko's first regular season loss in four years

ESKO, Minn.- The Blane Tetrault Era of Duluth East Football had an emphatic entrance on Thursday, defeating three-time defending section champion Esko 24-14 in their season opener.

The Greyhounds’ defense gave Esko plenty of problems, forcing four turnovers through fumbles in the first half. Meanwhile, running back Michael Lewis scored two first-half touchdowns with the help of his offensive line.

Thursday’s loss put an end to Esko’s 25-game regular season win streak, which started on November 12, 2020. During that timeframe, Esko had also won three consecutive 7AAA Championships.

Meanwhile, Mesabi East opened their regular season with a 52-6 win over South Ridge.

The Panthers had a promising start, forcing a turnover on downs. However, the Giants’ defense responded with an interception, followed by a touchdown on the next play.

Mesabi East will look to build on their strong start next week against Crosby-Ironton. South Ridge, meanwhile, will hit the road to face Deer River.
