UMD Hosts Student Activities Fair
DULUTH, Minn. — UMD hosted an event Thursday allowing incoming students to learn more about where they’d like to fit in on campus.
The Student Activities Fair had booths set up with information on different clubs and organizations. One sorority, Phi Sigma Sigma focuses on being out in the community and volunteering. A senior says they’re focus is on telling perspective members what it’s like to be involved in Greek Life.
“But here at UMD you know we’re a very tight knit community. We really don’t follow almost any of those stereotypes that you really hear in the media. And I think that’s one thing that we’re trying to breakthrough especially with potential students coming in is they see sororities and they’re like, ‘oh Greek Like? Not really sure if it’s for me.’ But we’re trying to show them that it’s really not what you see in the media,” said Lydia Rich, Phi Sigma Sigma member.
The Student Government Association was also showing their voice. The President says going to events like this is a great way to build some skills.
“It’s also just a good way to kind of build those soft or hard skills. Obviously, we’ve got classes, we’re all here to get a degree but sometimes those degrees aren’t necessarily going to give you the social skills that you might need to like speak in front of a crowd or to plan an event or things like that. So, being part of a club or an organization really helps you build those other skills and just get to know other people on campus and have a lot of fun,” said Remi Foust, President of the Student Government Association.
The Student Government Association is about programs they run, fixing problems on campus and being there to hear concerns. It is important to them that students know they are around.
