2nd Annual Wisconsin Stormwater Week

SUPERIOR, Wis. — It’s the second annual Wisconsin Stormwater week.

The week is all about spreading awareness of the sources of stormwater pollution. Wisconsin Land and Water is hosting webinars. And Tuesday they held one on road salt, commonly used to clear ice during the winter and its effects on the environment. Wednesday they discus ponds, and Thursday they will discuss stormwater treatment.

“Stormwater is not inherently bad. It’s when it runs off our urban landscapes and picks up pollutants. So, when we have our lawns, our parking lots, specifically places that have impervious surfaces so parking lots, sidewalks, roadways, they have a lot of things that are collected like trash, cigarettes, oil, other things like that that actually pollute and contaminate our water. So, when the stormwater runs off those surfaces and enters our storm drains it picks up those pollutants and brings them into the storm drains which convey that polluted stormwater to our waterways,” said Megan Hogfeldt, Water Resource Specialist.

Governer Tony Evers signed a proclamation establishing this week as the official Stormwater week. For more information and to register for the webinars you can visit the City of Superior Environmental Services Division Facebook page.
