Douglas County Steps Up Road Enforcement
SUPERIOR, Wis. — Drivers in Douglas County can expect to see an increased law enforcement presence on the roads.
With a recent uptick in deadly crashes, especially in rural areas, the Sheriff’s office is cooperating with Wisconsin State Patrol to increase traffic enforcement in the county. Douglas County’s Sheriff Matt Izzard has more about what’s behind the most recent crashes, and what the public should be aware of when behind the wheel.
“Majority of the crashes have happened in rural Douglas County, everywhere from state highways to town roads. It’s happening on a county highways, even. It doesn’t seem to be a rhyme or reason other than speed. An impairment, honestly, with the extra enforcement. Because when you see an emergency vehicle slow down, move over. That’s the law in Wisconsin,” said Sheriff Izzard. “Those laws will be enforced as well. We’ve had three very close calls with deputies almost getting hit on the side of highways. Within the last few weeks. So, we’re trying to send that message as well.”
And if you’re someone with a lead foot or thinks they’re fine to drive after a few drinks.
“Reckless driving in Douglas County will be enforced,” said Sheriff Izzard.
We asked the Sheriff how long the public should expect the increased enforcement to last? He said there’s no end date as of now, but said they have already put more deputies on the road.
