Fire Prevention Week Focuses on Smoke Alarms This Years
DULUTH, Minn. — It’s National Fire Prevention Week!
This year’s focus is on smoke alarms. The Duluth Fire Departments says to take some time this week to test your smoke alarms and check that they are in the right locations in your home. It’s recommended to have an alarm in each bedroom, one in the hallway outside the bedrooms, and at least one per floor of the home or building. This is how firefighters are out in the community promoting fire safety.
“We are in the second grades of ISD 709 this week teaching kids about smoke alarms and their importance. We are also offering a free firetruck ride to school if they fill out a form and tell us where their smoke alarms are and that they tested them,” said Lisa Consie, Duluth Fire Marshal. “Younger kids actually get scared sometimes when they hear smoke alarms go off. So, they need to understand and know that yes it can be scary, but these are the actions they have to take to help save them and their family in the event of a fire in their house.”
Fire Prevention week is always recognized the week of October 9th and is the longest running public health observance.
