500 Tutors Needed in Minnesota

DULUTH, Minn. — 500 tutors are needed across Minnesota with more than half needed in just rural areas.

AmeriCorps tutoring programs are looking to help fill these roles. Potential tutors do not need prior teaching experience, as they will be fully trained for the program. They can work with students individually or in small groups. Fewer than a third of Minnesotan students show a grade level proficiency in literacy and math. They are hoping to close those gaps.

“Usually when kids work with our tutors, they make more than a year’s worth of progress in the year that they work with our tutors. So, these programs really work,” said Emily Wartman, Program Manager for Ampact.

One tutor works at Stowe Elementary in Duluth. This is her advice for those interested.

“The training that they do is so in depth, and it just gives you the confidence you need to really just jump in and do it. If you’re on the fence, you love working with kids, and you really want to be part of the community this is the best way to do it. You’re strengthening our future and that’s really important,” said Kristina Meyer-Fladwood, Reading Corps Tutor.

17 tutors are needed in the Duluth area. People can earn a living stipend every two weeks and up to $2,800 for college tuition or student loans.
