Northern Star: Niya Wilson

Wilson owns the all-time record at the school with 80 goals and counting.

SUPERIOR, Wis.- There hasn’t been many places that UWS forward Niya Wilson hasn’t scored at during her career.

On October 12th, she added to her legacy by finding the back of the net at the newly-opened SCCU stadium.

“For me, being able to leave my mark on the first game is a super exciting thing. We had a lot of people score, it was a lot of fun. The energy on the bench, just everything was perfect,” said Wilson.

Tallying goals is almost a routine for Wilson as she owns the all-time record at the school with 80 goals and counting.

“She has that mindset like I’m going to find a way. She has these little tricks and flicks that you just don’t even know are coming. They’re really hard to account for and defend against,” added head coach Allison DeGroot.

Wilson isn’t the only one that has something up her sleeve offensively though as she forms quite the duo with teammate Mya Holmquist.

“Me and her have a lot of chemistry. If you look at stat lines, a lot of the time we’re assisting each other. We kind of just know where each other are and it’s fun to set each other up. You can tell that each one of us wants the other to succeed,” said Wilson.

Success on the field as well as off the field.

“What a lot of people don’t see is all the time and effort she puts into program outside of the soccer field. She also runs our fundraising committee. She’s been a big advocate for getting involved with the youth and running a youth camp here. She’s also been an advocate for the team going on an international trip,” added DeGroot.

All done to give back to the community that she grew up in.

“Spreading the love of the game in Superior and also making that connection with UWS and local athletes because they should have someone to look up to,” said Wilson.

Wilson and the Yellowjackets are next in action on Saturday against Bethany Lutheran.
