KYN: Superior Goats Help Combat Pesky Plants

SUPERIOR, Wis.– Superior Goats got their start this past summer. Owner Selinda Van Horn got a call to action, when she realized just how difficult plant removal can be.

“We’ve been using the goats to clear our own property. And so, we thought well, there are other owners that could benefit this. And there are areas where you can’t get machinery in. Especially with the lakes and everything around, where chemicals aren’t a good solution. The goats are a vegetation control solution that you can really get excited about,” said Van Horn.

According to Van Horn, the benefits don’t stop at just the convenience.

“Well, it’s really important for the environment. You know, we’re the Superior watershed. Everything, regardless of where you spray the chemicals, it all ends up down in the lake,” said Van Horn.

The goats have quite the appetite and can clear quite a bit of land.

“It’s amazing to see how they like the weeds. They prefer the weeds over the grasses and the other things. So, the plants that we often don’t like, that’s what they like. And so, they go after the poison ivy, and the other brush and stuff. And so, it’s just a benefit for everybody. The customers love to see the goats when they come off the trailer. It’s really fun to just watch them come down. And just start going to work right away. And there have been people who invite their neighbors over, and they’ll just sit and watch the goats. It’s very entertaining and they’re fun to watch. And it’s peaceful. You know it’s not loud with machinery. They’re just doing their job. It’s just, they fit in with the landscape,” said Van Horn.

Right now, Superior Goats is booking out for the Spring of next year.
