UMD Football & Walljasper Coming Off Monster Game in Winona

Walljasper had six touchdowns in UMD's 42-38 win over Winona State.

DULUTH, Minn.- It was victory Monday for the UMD football team.

The Bulldogs were finally able to have a one-score contest go their way on Saturday as a late touchdown by Kyle Walljasper lifted UMD past Winona State, 42 to 38.

The last score by Walljasper capped off a monster day as he finished with 6 total touchdowns and 420 yards total.

Head Coach Curt Wiese says he’s not surprised at the performance, adding it was an all-around group effort that helped pave the way for number 12.

“Been waiting for that this fall. Kyle took that game under his wing. I thought our offensive line, tight ends, running backs played well. I know they block for Kyle but he played a phenomenal football game. He was tough, he was aggressive, he wanted it more than Winona did. You know Winona’s a good football program. It was a very fun atmosphere to play in and good to get a win,” said Wiese.

No surprise as Walljasper was named the NSIC Offensive Player of the Week Monday afternoon for his efforts in Saturday’s contest.

The most rewarding feeling for him though is how his team finished.

“Definitely huge. I mean the whole time on the sidelines in a close game, people are thinking oh jeeze is it going to happen again? Are we going to lose it? But just keeping every confident and to come away with a win on one of those was huge for us coming into these next two weeks. And hopefully we can keep that winning going,” said Walljasper.

UMD will hit the road one last time this upcoming Saturday when they visit Concordia-St. Paul.

The Bulldogs have won their last 10 meetings against the Golden Bears. They’ll try to make it 11 at noon.
