Results Are In For Ordean East Middle School Mock Election
DULUTH, Minn. — The results are in for a mock election by Ordean East Middle School students.
The mock election is a program run with the Secretary of State’s Office. Over 400 schools participated in Minnesota. The whole process included 6th through 8th grade students researching candidates before Election Day to compare issues and determine who they would vote for. Then they got to hit the polls and cast their ballot. But unlike the Presidential race, the majority vote went toward Harris and Walz.
“I think it’s just a great way to highlight that there’s different regions that maybe lean a certain way. And we can talk a little bit about why that might be. And also, just kind of take a step back from it’s not necessarily about who won or lost but it’s about understanding the whole picture of the democracy and also helping students see that you know what whomever wins or whomever loses it never changes how you treat one another,” said Jodi Timmersman, 8th grade Global Studies teacher.
One student says they never knew what the voting process was like, and they are happy they got to vote.
“It just feels like I’m more engaged in what’s going on now because I know what to do and I know what’s happening and I actually can do something even if it’s a mock election so, I just think that might be nice for people my age to do,” said Gemma Kim, 8th grader.
According to the Secretary of State’s Office, events like these lead to greater voter turnout when the students become of age to vote.
