Fond du Lac Band of Lake Superior Chippewa Opens New Classroom on Farm Land
CLOQUET, Minn. — The Fond du Lac Band of Lake Superior Chippewa celebrated the opening of it’s new classroom on its farmland.
The Band has a 36-acre farm located in Cloquet, which serves as a place dedicated to building tribal food sovereignty.
Now, a new classroom has been opened on the land, which will used for teaching about food sovereignty, classes and demonstrations.
People got a first look at the new building at the grand opening, where there was many demonstrations and activities to take part in, such as apple pressing, tea bundles and corn husk doll making.
“This farm property was bought back in 2017 by the Band and the idea for this space was land access for Band members to grow their own food, so that the community could invest in tribal food sovereignty. But it’s become so much more than that, it’s become such a community hub,” said Campbell Fisher, Food Sovereignty Outreach Coordinator.
The farm space is also used for various programs and community feasts.
