Superior Grain Elevator Explodes On Connor’s Point; No Injuries Reported

SUPERIOR, Wis. – The Superior Fire Department is investigating an explosion at a plant on Connor’s Point in Superior Monday night.

Doorbell video from a home on Duluth’s Park Point captured multiple bursts of flames around 6:15 p.m.

Mayor Jim Paine told FOX 21 that fire crews responded to a grain explosion at the Viterra Grain Elevator at 400 Main Street.

Kat Statter, who provided FOX 21 with the doorbell video, said, “The entire living room turned orange with light from fire across the water. it was like a comet was in the sky and hit the ground in Superior.”

All workers had evacuated the elevator and were accounted for, according to the first fire unit to arrive on scene.

Fire investigators determined the explosion occurred in a “below grade area” of the plant and traveled up and out the loading tower.

“There was extensive damage to the hatches and covers over the beltway, as well as the structure of the tower,” according to Fire Chief Camron Vollbrecht.

The elevator had been in normal operation when the explosion happened, according to officials.

A cause is under investigation.
