Grain Elevator Blast Cause Still Unknown

SUPERIOR, Wisc. – Video from a Park Point home’s security camera Monday evening, captures the moment an explosion rocks a grain elevator across the bay.

A press release from the Superior Fire Chief Camron Vollbrecht, confirmed the location of the blast as the Viterra Grain Elevator on Connor’s Point.

All three of the city’s fire engines responded to the blast shortly after 6:00 pm. No injuries were reported, and crews did not end up battling an active fire, instead only needing to extinguish smoldering hotspots.

Viterra’s Superior office directed our questions to their Communications Manager. In a brief statement over the phone, Viterra acknowledged the explosion and said they are working with authorities to determine the ultimate cause.

The investigation into what caused the blast is ongoing, though officials said an explosion likely occurred in the lower grade area before moving up and out of the tower.

Chief Vollbrecht said the blast caused “extensive damage to the hatches and covers over the beltway, as well as the structure of the tower.”
