The DECC Preps for Thanksgiving

DULUTH, Minn.– With Thanksgiving being a day away, volunteers at the DECC is wasting no time with getting their meals squared away.

After planning all year, the 1,540 Thanksgiving meals are being boxed up.

They have quite the crew helping out this year, even booking out volunteer slots.

The DECC has been feeding the Northland for 35 years.

“We have a lot of nonprofits that rely on the food as well. A lot of the people who are serving in that community and population, and homeless. They’re shut down for the Thanksgiving Holiday. So, it’s a way for us to kind of be able to help fill that need within the community during the holiday,” said Monica Henrickson, the event organizer for the DECC.

The DECC is teaming up with Mayo Ambulance, UPS, and 148th Fighter wing to deliver these meals Thanksgiving morning.

But they will also be serving up meals that afternoon.

“You walk around the tables, and you hear the different conversations. And a lot of times it’s random people. One year, one of my favorite conversations, it was a bunch of older gentlemen had all been in different wars. And they were sharing their stories. You know, you hear these things, and they welcome you into their conversation,” said Hendrickson.

The tables are set and ready to welcome guests from 11 AM to 3 PM on Thanksgiving in the Lake Superior Ballroom.

The dinner is free, as well as parking at the DECC.
