Head of the Lakes United Way’s Winter Day of Caring

SUPERIOR Wis.– On Wednesday, hundreds of volunteers helped at 15 nonprofits across the Northland.
To help celebrate Head of the Lakes United Ways Winter Day of Caring.

One of those places is the Superior Douglas County YMCA.

Volunteers were tasked with writing over 100 thank you letters to members of the YMCA, that helps things run smoothly.

The fitness center has a mission to help provide a safe, and comfortable space for anyone attending their programs.

United Way’s Development Director tells us this year’s winter day of caring is one to remember.

“This is the biggest our winter day of caring has ever been. Really amazing, we always have more people in the summer, because you get to be outside.
But to see people give back during the holiday season is just incredible. So, we’re so grateful,” said Erin Garbriner, United Way’s Development Director.

YMCA staff is also feeling grateful for the members receiving those letters.
It’s because of them, that scholarships can allow more families to use their facility.

“It’s extremely important. Because like I said, it helps provide access for those families that might not always have the opportunity to provide those things for their kids.
It gives them an outlet, it gives them a safe space,” said Steven Woods, Community Engagement Director for the Superior Douglas County YMCA.

Head of the Lakes United Way has two annual days of caring.

The next one will take place on June 11th.
