Duluth Federal Prison Shutting Down
DULUTH, Minn. — The decades-old Duluth Federal Prison is shutting down.
The Federal Bureau of Prison said Thursday that it’s one of six prisons across the country being “deactivated.”
The agency said the decision is being made to help deal with significant challenges, including a critical staffing shortage, crumbling infrastructure and limited budgetary resources.
The Duluth camp is not only dilapidated. Officials said there are several condemned buildings that are contaminated with asbestos and lead paint.
About 736 inmates and 90 staff members will be moved to other facilities.
