Volunteers Prepare for Hmong New Year Celebration
DULUTH, Minn.– The annual Hmong New Year is right around the corner and volunteers are rolling out 800 egg rolls and purple rice for this celebration.
Every year, the Northland has the opportunity to experience the Hmong New Year celebration.
The event is described as a reunion, regulars will often return every year to experience the gathering.
The Hmong New Year Celebration has been going on for decades.
“It’s free and open to the community. And it’s a great way for the Hmong community to share food, and culture, and history. And also, just the wonderful colorful outfits we wear during this special time of year,” said Pakou Ly, one of the volunteers for the Twin Ports Hmong New Year.
The traditions date back to the Vietnam War and tells the story of when the Hmong arrived at the United States.
When walking into the church, you’ll be immersed in culture.
“When you come in, you’re going to hear the sounds of the people. You’re going to hear the jingles of the coins on the outfits. You’re going to see just vibrant colors. And you’re going to hear beautiful music. So just come with an open mind. Come with an empty stomach, because we’ll feed you,” explained Ly.
The celebration will take place in the First United Methodist Church in Duluth on Saturday from 9 AM to 4 PM.
