ATV Goes Through Ice On St. Louis River

DULUTH, Minn. – Multiple law enforcement and emergency agencies responded to the St. Louis River Thursday after an ATV went through the ice.

The call for help came in just before 3 p.m.

It was reported that an ATV went through the ice on the river near Spirit Mountain.

When officials arrived, it was unclear how long the ATV was there or if anyone was in distress.

After a lengthy investigation, including the review of surveillance video, investigators were able to identify a male who appeared to match that of the registered owner of the ATV.

A phone number was then located for the owner and confirmation was made that he was safe.

“The St. Louis County Sheriff’s Office would like to remind everyone to use caution on the ice as ice depths across the area can fluctuate due to various conditions. We would also like to stress that if you find yourself in a situation like this, please call 911 and advise us, so we aren’t tying up a large amount of emergency resources searching for you when an event is reported,” according to a news release about the incident.
